We are delighted to announce that Atobatele Zainab Abdulrasheed is the inaugural winner of Teach for Change Nigeria (TFCN) Teacher Prize for Literature.  Being the first year, we received a small amount of applications and Zainab’s stood out in the commitment she shows in spreading the love of reading among her students through engaging and provoking literary activities, despite limited resources, which embolden and strengthen their character, beyond the passing of exams.

Atobatele Zainab is a 29 year old teacher who is passionate about teaching and mentoring young people. Her love for reading and the world of fiction informed her choice of English Literature as a course of study at the University of Abuja. She has been teaching and mentoring teenagers for about seven years now. She is currently a teacher of English language and Literature in English at King Ado Senior High school located at Lagos Island, south west Nigeria. She is a recipient of awards of excellence from Vibrant Girls Development Initiative (VGDI) and Daniel Abdul Leadership and Mentoring Foundation. Recently, she received an award for Best Teacher, 3rd position (Senior school) at the Lagos State Education District III Merit Award Ceremony 2018.

In her words,

The TFCN Prize for Literature has been an eye opening one. It exposed me to having a deep reflection on the essence of Literature in English as a subject and ways it can be taught effectively. Winning this prestigious award is surreal. I am honoured. I am grateful that an organisation such as Teach for Change Nigeria (TFCN) created this platform to appreciate teachers of Literature. As a recipient of this award, I am charged to soar higher and be the best. I intend to use this opportunity to continue to improve on my teaching skills and enhancing the learning experience of my dear students. Teach for Change Nigeria(TFCN) as an organisation has created a platform to assist teachers of Literature and other related subjects to harness their full potentials through their website and other social media platforms. Teachers have unlimited access to resources, materials, teaching techniques, drills and skills to make the learning of literature productive. Thank you for this laudable project.’

Atobatele Zainab Abdulrasheed will be receiving a cash prize of 50,000 naira, sponsored by iServe2050, a leadership training platform committed to advocacy and education in Nigeria.
